Major Arcana — XIII
Upright Meaning
Death is the card of necessary endings. The armored rider does not come to punish — he comes to make room. Something in your life has already died; your only choice is whether to honor the ending or drag its corpse forward. Between the two towers on the horizon, the sun is already rising.
Reversed Meaning
Reversed, Death indicates resistance to a transformation that is already happening. You are clinging to a relationship, identity, or chapter that wants to release you. The longer you refuse the ending, the more painful the eventual crossing. Let it die so you can live.
✦ The Illustration
An armored skeletal rider on a pale horse advances beneath a rising sun framed by two distant towers. The rider bears a black banner emblazoned with a white five-petaled rose. A fallen crowned figure lies before the hooves; a praying child stands untouched beside the path.
✦ Affirmation
“I release what has ended; what dies in me now was never meant to live this long.”
