✦ Overview
Peridot is one of the few gemstones that forms in only one color — a distinctive lime-to-olive green produced by iron within its olivine crystal structure. Unlike most gems that form in the Earth's crust, peridot originates in the mantle, brought to the surface by volcanic activity. Remarkably, it has also been found in meteorites — interstellar travelers carrying this green stone from the outer solar system. The ancient Egyptians called it "the gem of the Sun" and mined it on the Red Sea island of Zabargad (St. John's Island) for over 3,500 years.
For the ancient Egyptians, peridot was sacred to Isis and believed to protect against the terrors of the night. They called it "topazios" — a name later applied to a different stone — and used it extensively in amulets and temple offerings. Medieval Europeans imported it and set it in church gold, mistaking many large specimens for emerald. In Hawaiian tradition, peridot crystals found in volcanic rock are called "Pele's tears" — gifts from the goddess of fire. The U.S. state of Arizona contains the world's largest deposits on the San Carlos Apache Reservation.
Spiritually, peridot is a stone of abundance, optimism, and personal empowerment. It works across both the solar plexus and heart chakras — bridging the will to act with the openness to receive. Peridot clears out the accumulations of jealousy, resentment, and negative self-talk that block prosperity and authentic joy. It is the stone you reach for when life has become heavy — when cynicism, disappointment, or a sense of scarcity has narrowed your vision of what is possible.

✦ Crystal Allies
✦ Zodiac Connection
Peridot serves those born under Leo (July 23 — August 22) and Virgo (August 23 — September 22). For Leo, peridot amplifies the sign's natural generosity and radiance while gently dissolving the shadow patterns of pride and need for external validation. For Virgo — a sign that can be prone to harsh self-criticism and perfectionism — peridot opens the heart to self-compassion and reminds Virgo that the abundance they help others create is equally available to them.
✦ Affirmation
“I release all that is not love. Abundance is my natural state and joy is my birthright.”
