Five questions to illuminate your energetic blueprint. Answer from lived experience, not from who you wish you were.
Your energy throughout the day is best described as…
Every person alive belongs to one of five energetic types. Your type determines your strategy — the single most important decision-making principle in your entire design.
Open and enveloping — designed to attract the right work and the right people
Generators are the life-force engine of the planet. With a defined Sacral center, they carry a virtually inexhaustible supply of generative energy — when that energy is properly engaged. The Sacral motor buzzes and hums when a Generator is in their correct work. It makes sounds: the gut yes of "uh-huh," or the gut no of "uhn-uhn." These are not metaphors. They are the primary intelligence of Generator existence.
The tragedy of the conditioned Generator is a person who has spent a lifetime initiating — chasing work, chasing relationships, chasing dreams — only to wonder why nothing ever feels like it fits. The Generator is not designed to initiate. They are designed to respond. Life presents things to respond to, and when the gut says yes, the path opens with a smoothness that feels almost magical compared to the grinding effort of initiation.
Satisfaction, the Generator signature, is visceral. It is the full-body resonance at the end of a day of correct work — the hum of a life well-lived. When a Generator masters the art of waiting and responding, they discover that the right opportunities do not need to be chased: they arrive, asking for exactly what the Generator was built to give. This is not passivity. It is the most precise and sustainable form of action available to the human system.
Deep, full-body satisfaction after a day of correct work. The body humming with aliveness, not depleted. Sleep arrives easily because you have genuinely spent yourself on something real.
Frustration: a feeling of being stuck, stagnant, invisible, like pushing through mud. Often accompanied by the sense that life is passing you by. A consistent signal you initiated rather than responded.
The master craftsperson who has given their whole life to a single skill and achieved something rare through love. The builder whose sustained effort creates enduring structures. The dedicated parent, the devoted artist, the professional who shows up not from obligation but from genuine aliveness.
For seven days, do not initiate a single conversation, project, or decision. Wait for things to present themselves — people, opportunities, questions — and notice what your gut says before your mind does.
Your Profile is drawn from the lines of the hexagram, revealing the costume your soul wears through this lifetime — the role you play in the grand theater of human experience.
The 1/3 profile builds its security through deep, private investigation and then learns through firsthand experience — including what does not work. Their trials are never failures; they are the curriculum that makes their knowledge unshakeable and ultimately trustworthy to others.
The 1/4 requires a solid foundation of knowledge before they can move confidently in the world. Their opportunities arrive through the quality of relationships they cultivate and maintain, and they hold those connections with deep personal loyalty and care.
The 2/4 carries natural gifts they often cannot see clearly in themselves. They need genuine solitude to develop and restore, but their opportunities arrive through the opportunist network — trusted others who see the talent, name it, and call it forward.
The 2/5 carries enormous unconscious charisma, and others project their needs and savior fantasies onto them. Their deepest challenge is learning to manage the weight of these projections while rigorously honoring their fundamental need for solitude and genuine downtime.
The 3/5 profile learns by doing, encountering friction, adjusting, and doing again. The wisdom accumulated through this firsthand experience becomes genuinely universal and applicable. Others eventually see them as practical, grounded problem-solvers with real answers.
The 3/6 lives in three clear phases: 0–30 years of trial and error building experiential wisdom; 30–50 years observing from a distance with a "roof" perspective; 50+ years stepping down from the roof as a living, embodied role model others can actually see.
The 4/6 spends the first half of life building reliable foundations through close personal networks and trusted relationships. After the transition at midlife, they emerge as genuine role models — people whose consistency and embodied wisdom become a living example.
The 4/1 requires both a solid foundation of personal knowledge and a reliable network of trusted relationships to feel genuinely secure. Their influence moves through personal connection — they do not broadcast to the masses but transform quietly through intimacy and trust.
The 5/1 carries the karma of the savior archetype — others project onto them the expectation that they have practical solutions to real problems. The solid foundation of line 1 investigation means they often genuinely do. But the pressure of projection requires constant, conscious navigation.
The 5/2 alternates between deep solitude and being summoned to solve crises. They have natural gifts they access somewhat unconsciously. Their challenge is being genuinely available when truly called without being consumed by the unrelenting expectations of others.
The 6/2 moves through three life phases: a first 30 years of trial, experimentation, and hands-on learning; a middle phase of stepping back and observing with distance and perspective; a final phase of stepping back into life as a genuinely embodied role model.
The 6/3 combines the martyr's insistence on learning through direct experience with the role model's eventual embodiment of that accumulated wisdom as a way of living. Their teaching comes from having genuinely lived through — not merely studied — everything they know.
Each center is either defined (colored, consistent) or undefined (open, receptive). Defined centers express a fixed quality; undefined centers are where you gain wisdom through experience with others.
Human Design is a living system — not a personality test, but an experiment in radical self-trust.
In January 1987, a man known as Ra Uru Hu underwent an eight-day mystical experience on the island of Ibiza. During this time, he received what he described as a transmission from an intelligence he called "The Voice" — a precise system for understanding the mechanics of the human energy field. He was instructed to record everything with full fidelity. The result, after years of refinement and teaching, became the Human Design System.
Whether one takes the origin story literally or understands it as metaphor, what emerged was an extraordinary synthesis — a map that drew from four ancient and modern systems, combining them in a way that neither contradicted nor diluted any single source, but revealed the deeper unity running through all of them simultaneously.
The ancient Chinese oracle provides the 64 gates and 64 codons — the same number as the sequences of the human genetic code. Each gate carries a specific quality of consciousness that activates in a person when a planet transits through it.
The positions of all planets at the exact moment of birth — and 88 days before birth — activate specific gates in the chart. Astrology provides the timing and the archetypal content that flows through the entire system.
The 10 sephirot of the Kabbalistic Tree of Life correspond to the 9 energy centers of the BodyGraph plus the higher unity. The channels and paths of the Kabbalah find new expression in the 36 channels of Human Design.
The traditional 7-chakra map is reorganized into 9 centers, acknowledging that the original chakra system described a different stage of human consciousness than the one available to humanity since 1781.
The synthesis creates something none of the individual systems could produce alone: a precise, mechanistic map that is tied to the specific moment of birth and changes uniquely with every person who has ever lived. Not a personality category, but a blueprint.
Authority is always in the body, never in the mind. The hierarchy below shows which signal is the correct decision-making mechanism for each design configuration — from the most powerful and widespread at the top, down to the rarest at the base.
The highest and most powerful authority. You ride an emotional wave — highs and lows — and clarity only emerges over time, somewhere in the middle of the wave, after the initial chemistry has settled. The rule is absolute: never make a significant decision on the high or the low. Sleep on it. Wait for the fog to clear. The right answer will still be right tomorrow.
The gut response — involuntary, immediate, and pre-verbal. It sounds like "uh-huh" (yes) or "uhn-uhn" (no). It is felt in the body before the mind registers the question. It does not explain itself and does not need to. The practice is learning to hear the signal beneath the noise of rationalization, and to trust it when you do.
The oldest awareness center in the body — the immune system's intelligence. Splenic knowing is quiet, instantaneous, and non-repeating. It will speak once and then go silent. Learning to catch it requires stillness and practice. It is the intuitive hit that arrives before thought, the instinctive yes or no that the mind immediately tries to override.
Authority through the will and the heart. For Ego Manifested Manifestors, the question is: does my heart want this? For Ego Projected Projectors: the authority lives in what you say — speak your desires aloud to trusted others and listen to what naturally comes out. The ego knows what it genuinely wants versus what it feels it should want.
Authority through the voice of the true self. Talk about your decision with people you trust — not to get their advice, but to hear what you say. The G center speaks through the Throat when the channel is present, and what comes out of your mouth reveals what is genuinely correct for you. The talking itself is the authority.
These Projectors have no internal authority — the decision is made in relationship to the environment. Consult many different trusted people. Go to many different places. Notice where and with whom your decision feels right versus where it does not. The environment is the authority, and the quality of sound and space around you matters enormously.
The most patient authority in the system. Wait a full lunar cycle — 28 days — before any significant decision. The moon moves through all 64 gates in this time, activating different centers in the Reflector's open chart. What feels consistently correct across the full cycle, through conversations with many trusted people, across many different moods and phases, is genuinely right.
You do not need to understand the entire system to begin. You need one thing: your strategy. One principle, lived consistently over time, will change the architecture of your life. Not because you believed in it — but because you tested it, and the results were undeniable.
The Human Design experiment is not about perfection. It is about direction. Each decision made from correct authority is a small course correction that, compounded over months and years, produces a life that feels genuinely yours — not the life you were conditioned to want, but the one your design was built for.
The vocabulary of Human Design is precise. Understanding these core mechanics illuminates how the system works as a whole.
Definition refers to how many separate, unconnected groups of defined centers exist in your chart. Single Definition (all centers connected) gives a consistent, self-contained energy. Split Definition (two separate groups) means you are designed to bond with specific people who "bridge" the split — they complete your circuit. Triple and Quadruple Splits are rarer and indicate people who need many different kinds of connection to feel whole.
Conditioning is what happens when an undefined center takes in the energy of a defined center in someone else and amplifies it, then the mind decides this amplified energy belongs to the self. A Generator with an undefined Sacral, for example, may feel like they have Generator-level drive — and run themselves into depletion by operating as if they do. Recognizing conditioning is the beginning of deconditioning.
As the planets move through the 64 gates of the I Ching in their orbits, they activate new channels and centers in the global field. This creates what Human Design calls the neutrino weather — a continuously shifting energetic environment that affects everyone, though it affects open centers far more powerfully than defined ones. Understanding transits helps explain why some days feel very different from others.
The not-self strategy is what the mind does when it takes over decision-making from inner authority. It operates from fear, from conditioning absorbed through undefined centers, from what other people expect, or from who you wish you were. The not-self is not evil — it is the mind doing its best without the right tool. The experiment is simply moving decision-making from the mind to the body's intelligence.
Inner authority is the specific body-based decision-making mechanism that is reliable for your design. The hierarchy runs from Emotional (Solar Plexus) at the top — always wait for emotional clarity — down through Sacral, Splenic, Ego Manifested, Self-Projected, Mental (for Projectors with no internal authority), and finally Lunar (for Reflectors). Authority is always below the throat, never in the mind.
A defined center (colored in) operates consistently and reliably — it expresses a fixed quality of energy regardless of who is in the room. An undefined center (white) is open, receptive, and amplifying — it takes in the energy of defined centers around it. Defined centers are your fixed nature; undefined centers are your wisdom. Neither is superior. Both are designed.
Creates independence; others instinctively do not approach without permission. The aura that moves the world by moving first.
Warm, magnetic, inviting. Pulls the right work and people in naturally. The aura that sustains and builds.
Combines the Generator's magnetism with the Manifestor's catalytic charge. Fast-moving and compelling.
Penetrating and precise. Locks onto one person or system at a time with full attention. The aura that sees and is seen.
Deflects definition while sampling everything. Reflects the health of the community back to itself like a living mirror.
Your aura is not something you perform — it is something you radiate. When you live in alignment with your type and authority, the aura operates as it was designed to: drawing in what is correct, and naturally deflecting what is not. The experiment is trusting this mechanism before you can fully explain it.
